Dr. Selina C. Wang leads the Berta Family Laboratory at the UC Davis Olive Center, an advanced analytical research facility dedicated to advancing science, quality, and innovation in olives and olive oil. The laboratory is managed by Xueqi (Shirley) Li MSc.
Named in honor of Firmin Berta (’57) and his late brother Irvin, the laboratory was made possible through a transformative $750,000 gift from the Berta family. Their generosity strengthened the Olive Center’s research by enabling laboratory renovations, acquisition of advanced analytical equipment, new orchard plantings, and expanded opportunities for students and early-career scientists.
The Berta family’s connection to UC Davis is deeply personal. After returning home from Army service, Firmin Berta arrived at UC Davis searching for direction — and found a community where he felt welcomed and valued. That sense of belonging shaped his lifelong commitment to the university and was later shared by his daughter, Mary Cristina (’04). Their enduring support reflects a belief in education, mentorship, and the power of scientific discovery.
Today, the Berta Family Laboratory supports cutting-edge research in agricultural chemistry, quality standards, authenticity, processing, and sustainability. The lab maintains a strong publication record in peer-reviewed journals and provides hands-on research training for students, many of whom go on to careers in the California olive and olive oil industry.
Through the Berta family’s generosity, the laboratory continues to expand knowledge, support the next generation of scientists, and strengthen the impact of UC Davis.
